Australian opener Jake Weatherald has opened up about his surprise axing from the Test squad after the recent defeat to Bangladesh. Despite losing his place midway through the two-match series, the left-hander remains confident that he is the best option to partner Travis Head at the top of the order.
Weatherald was dropped from the squad for the second and final Test of the ongoing series in Mackay, starting on Saturday, August 22. The Pat Cummins-led team suffered a nine-wicket defeat in Darwin. Selectors have recalled Matt Renshaw, who could make his first Test appearance since 2023.
Jake Weatherald was informed of his axing by chairman of selectors George Bailey on Monday. Speaking to CODE Sports, the 31-year-old said that he was surprised by the decision after spending the earlier part of the day fishing in Darwin with Alex Carey and Travis Head.
“I was one of the people that didn’t perform against a team that I should have in conditions where they were pretty good for batting, especially in the second innings,” Weatherald said.
“So I had an opportunity to make runs, and when you lose heads will roll. If you win you’re probably not changing too much. Unfortunately we lost, it’s just part of it.”
There Was An Element Of Surprise - Jake Weatherald
Jake Weatherald struggled in his first Test series against Bangladesh, scoring 23 in the first innings after edging a drive against Hasan Mahmud before falling for a duck in the second innings. He has scored only 224 runs at an average of 20.36 across his six Test appearances.
Renshaw returned to Australia's Test setup for the first time since 2023 after initially remaining on standby for the series. He trained with the Australian squad in Brisbane before receiving the call-up and fielded at first slip during training in Mackay on Thursday.
Weatherald admitted that the decision came as a surprise, but he also understood why the selectors made the change after the defeat to Bangladesh.
“There was an element of surprise, definitely. But I guess that’s professional sport. You’ve got very high standards of batting in our country, and I guess when you lose to Bangladesh in Australia, things are going to roll. So from my point of view I can understand it. I didn’t bat well enough,” Weatherald said.
Jake Weatherald Targets Australia A Tour to Fight Back
Jake Weatherald made technical changes during the off-season to address issues exposed during the Ashes. He felt the adjustments were working well in practice against Australia's Test attack but could not reproduce that form against Bangladesh.
“I felt as though I was doing really well the week before. I’ve done it really well against some really good bowlers, obviously,” Weatherald said.
“The conditions themselves were a bit different to what I prepared for. That’s not an excuse. It’s just the way it was, and I probably didn’t adapt quick enough to the conditions and the bowlers I was facing out the middle.”
Weatherald has returned to Adelaide to resume pre-season preparations with South Australia. He is now targeting the Australia A tour of India next month as an opportunity to show his ability in Asian conditions.
