HOPEWELL, N.Y. — One person is dead and four others have serious injuries after a medical transport bus collided with a dump truck Tuesday afternoon in Hopewell.
The Ontario County Sheriff says a medical transport bus driven by a 75-year-old man pulled in front of a dump truck on State Route 488 and Freshour Road.
News10NBC spoke with neighbors who say crashes at that intersection are not uncommon.
“We have multiple accidents here. This one probably is our worst,” Wolfgram said.
Raymond Wolfgram has lived near the intersection for six years, and has seen plenty of crashes
“Easily over a dozen [crashes] a year, I would say. Some are minor. Most of them shut down the intersection,” Wolfgram said. “County Road 4 and Freshour Road is bad, and Taylor Road and Freshour Road are bad. But this one, [State Route] 488 and Freshour Road are worse.”
Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione agrees the intersection poses a threat for drivers.
“This intersection is known for crashes. It’s known for personal injury crashes. Specifically for north bound vehicles that are going to cross Route 488. It is a challenge. And you have to stop and and definitely take an extra second to make sure nobody’s coming from either direction,” Cirencione said.
Wolfgram says there was talk about possibly putting a roundabout at the intersection, but nothing has been approved yet.
“We would love to see the speed limit dropped. It is 40 miles an hour just up the road on 488. But it would be nice to see the town of Hopewell, Ontario County, [or] New York State take action. I’d love to see the police out here a little bit more,” Wolfgram said.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office has not released the name of the victim who died or any injured passengers. News10NBC is working to learn if anyone will be charged.
