If you feel like you’ve been getting bitten by mosquitoes more often than usual, it may not be your imagination.
According to some experts, an invasive species of mosquito that actually comes out in broad daylight and can ingest multiple blood meals could be to blame if you’re feeling like the insects are more prevalent than usual.
Mosquito abatement districts around the Chicago area are reporting higher activities of mosquitoes than usual this summer, and while the hot and damp weather has produced conditions favorable for the insects to breed.
One of the insects seeing population gains is the Asian tiger mosquito, named for its distinctive stripes.
While most mosquito species tend to be most active at dusk and dawn, Asian tiger mosquitoes are typically active during the daylight hours, and while they can only fly approximately the length of a football field in search of a meal, researchers are finding enough of them that residents could potentially be feeling their impacts.
“They’ll take multiple blood meals, they’re really good at biting people, and they’re better than the mosquitoes we’re used to,” Mark Clifton from the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District said.
Clifton said the mosquito species is now the third-most common that he finds in traps around the area, and encouraged residents to do their part to ensure that the insects don’t have places to breed and to live.
“That mosquito is being produced close to someone’s home, in their own yard or right next door,” he said.
Mosquitoes are well known for liking stagnant water to reproduce, and they can also breed in damp, shaded areas, according to officials.
The species, like other mosquitoes, can transmit diseases including West Nile, so residents are also urged to use bug repellant and other measures to protect themselves outdoors.
