As students attend the first week of classes, the summer heat with “feels like” temperatures of over 100 degrees can affect how students plan out their day, take breaks and manage class schedules in the next few days.
August marks the highest temperatures on record for Alabama in 2026, and the first time an extreme heat warning has been issued since Aug. 2023.
Paris Key, a sophomore majoring in finance, said being familiar with the layout on campus and commuting from class to class was easy for her first day back, but the only challenge was the heat waves.
“The only thing I would say is it’s really hot outside, like so freaking hot outside, but luckily mini-fans and some water with you is the best thing I’ve been doing here today,” Key said.
During periods of extensive heat, it’s recommended to limit time outside from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., stay hydrated and avoid drinking energy or caffeinated drinks.
Ty’Nicya Presswood, a sophomore majoring in real estate and marketing, said students should look after their health while dealing with the extreme heat.
“Make sure you eat, cause we really don’t need people falling out today or at any time of the year, even when it’s cold,” Presswood said.
Xavier Kynard, a fifth-year student majoring in cybersecurity, says his first day back on campus was great, and he felt welcomed by faculty and staff despite the hot weather.
“My experience so far has been great. I really enjoy the UA experience and all the people around. Everybody’s nice and welcoming,” Conard said. “Going from class to class in the heat right now is pretty hard with it being this hot.”
Kennedy Copeland, a sophomore majoring in nursing, said students should continue to stay hydrated and maintain focus on nutrition.
“Everybody should stay hydrated, drink your water and get you something to eat because it is hot,” Copeland said.
