The A’s stand alone at the bottom of the MLB standings after Wednesday’s loss to Kansas City (combined with an Angels win over Houston). Their 49-77 showing has them on a 63-win pace. Given their injuries and how poorly they’ve played over the last two months, there’s a decent chance they won’t even get to 60 wins. This will probably be their third 100-loss season in the last five years.
Even if the A’s didn’t expect a playoff berth, they clearly didn’t anticipate being this bad. They moved on from GM David Forst earlier this month — albeit with a semantic discrepancy between the organization and outside reporting about whether that split was mutual or a firing. In either case, it’s safe to assume there wouldn’t have been a mid-August GM change if things were going well. Longtime assistant GM Dan Feinstein is running the front office on an interim basis. It seems likely owner John Fisher will go outside the organization for a permanent hire.
What should be the incoming group’s priorities for getting the A’s on track?
