CNY Feeds president says new Avon mill will give farmers more options

AVON, N.Y. — Central New York Feeds is opening a new feed mill in Avon after breaking ground last week.

News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke to the company’s president about the impact the new facility will have. The area is currently just a patch of dirt, but Central New York Feeds is turning it into a new feed mill. The company says this will cut some of its transportation costs and offer more feed options for local farmers.

“I think the more competition on their feed suppliers, the better it gives them. You know, if they’re unhappy with one option, they have another. If they, it forces everybody to be really competitive on pricing,” Bitz said.

Karl Bitz, the president of CNY Feeds, said the new mill will be state of the art and cater to each farmer’s specific needs.

“So we buy, bulk ingredients, we buy specialty vitamins and minerals, and in smaller capacities, and, we get formulations from our customers or nutrition consultants they work with, and we make a custom blend for their farm,” Bitz said.

Renderings on the organization’s website show what the mill may look like when it’s done. Its current mill is more than an hour away east in Jordan.

“There’s a cost associated with every mile you drive a truck. Between fuel, wear on the truck. So being 100 miles closer, just, you know, it would cut, you know, for a farm, you know, in this direction. It could cut the freight costs in half,” Bitz said.

Bitz said CNY Feeds chose this area because of the support from the town, how far west it is and because it’s so close to a rail line. Bitz said a lot of its supplies are moved by train.

“The, local railroad that operates the short line that’s just over here. They’re the ones we bought the property from. They’re excited to develop. You know, the this property for, customers that are going to utilize their rail service,” Bitz said.

Bitz said the mill mostly uses an automated process, but there will still be a few job openings there.

“We’re looking at maybe on day one, 6 to 8 jobs and, you know, at full capacity, maybe 15 to 20,” Bitz said.

Bitz is hopeful to have the new facility up and running by this time next year. This is CNY Feeds’ first geographic expansion since its founding 35 years ago. The Bitz family has been involved in New York agriculture for nearly 200 years.
