The government has argued that there is no clear evidence of a medical emergency that requires the former Pakistan captain to be treated at a private hospital. They are also worried that giving Khan this facility could create a similar demand from other prisoners.
Azam Nazeer Tarar said in a video-recorded statement issued on the night of August 18: “This order is not within the four walls of the law. If the interim order is not recalled, it will open a floodgate of prisoners seeking similar relief, which under the prevalent law cannot be granted.”
The issue is not only about Imran Khan’s medical treatment. His family has also been pushing for regular contact with him. The Supreme Court order directed authorities to allow Khan to speak with his two sons, Sulaiman and Kasim, twice a week.
Both sons live in London and have not seen their father since 2022 because of visa problems. Kasim has said that his father’s health is the biggest concern for the family. They are hoping the government follows the court’s instructions and allows them to speak with Khan and visit him.
Kasim Khan said in a statement shared with Reuters: “We hope the government adheres to the court orders...allows calls and issues our visas to Pakistan simply so we can come and see him.”
Imran Khan’s legal troubles
Imran Khan has been in jail since August 2023 after facing several cases following his removal as Pakistan’s prime minister in 2022. The cases are related to state gifts, the Al-Qadir Trust case, and allegations linked to violence during protests.
Several of his convictions have been suspended or overturned, while other cases and appeals are still pending. The legendary all-rounder has denied wrongdoing and has repeatedly said that the cases against him are politically motivated.
