Late heroics power Alabama soccer past No. 21 Memphis

On Saturday evening, Alabama soccer upset No. 21 Memphis 2-1 with a late goal in the 89th minute from defender Avery Brown.

“I give our players all the credit. They battled and competed,” head coach Wes Hart said. “I think our depth showed tonight. We got exactly what we asked for out of our reserves.”

The Tigers led the game in shots with 12 to the Crimson Tide’s nine. However, Alabama had four shots on goal to Memphis’ three.

It wasn’t until just after midway through the first half that Alabama was able to find the back of Memphis’ net. In the 28th minute, Memphis defender Finley Lavin had a handball in the box leading to a Crimson Tide penalty.

Forward Larkin Thomason stepped up to the penalty mark and sent the ball into the bottom left of the net, crossing the line for a goal.

For the remainder of the half, the game was end-to-end between the two teams, leaving the halftime score Alabama one to nil.

The Tigers started the second half hot, with a goal from forward Taliah Brooks in the 47th minute to tie the game.

From there, Memphis had four more shots and Alabama had three before the Crimson Tide saw the back of the net again.

“Memphis made some good adjustments at halftime and they probably had a little more of the run of play in the second half, but we were able to create a couple good looks regardless,” Hart said.

In the last six seconds of game time, midfielder Melina Rebimbas set Brown up for a game-winning header from a set piece.

This game marked Alabama’s first road win over a ranked opponent since 2022, and it is only the third team to beat Memphis at home since the pitch opened in 2017. This Crimson Tide win broke the Tigers’ 41-game win streak at home.

“What a good team [Memphis] is. I’ve got nothing but respect for the job they’ve done. I’m not surprised they haven’t lost here very often. That’s a tough team to play,” Hart said.

The Crimson Tide will be back in action at home against Texas Christian University on Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. CT.
