ALLEGANY COUNTY, N.Y. — The Allegany County Department of Health has confirmed two cases of measles with up to 10 more potential cases.
Allegany County is in the Southern Tier, near the Pennsylvania border. The department says all the cases are within the Town of New Hudson and the broad community risk remains low.

News10NBC’s Buffalo affiliate spoke with an infectious disease specialist with the University at Buffalo, who says getting vaccinated does more than just protect you.
“You’ll protect others in the community, hopefully achieving that 95% level of vaccination which will confer herd immunity and likely keep measles out of your area,” said Dr. Thomas Russo.
Confirmed case in Seneca County
On Aug. 14, the Seneca County Health Department reported a confirmed case of measles in an unvaccinated resident in the county who recently traveled from Pennsylvania.

Measles cases in the US
Health officials say the U.S. is experiencing its worst measles outbreak in 35 years. As of July 22, officials say more than 2,200 cases were reported nationwide this year.

Dr. Russo says you’re 95% protected against measles if you were born before 1957, have already had measles, or are fully vaccinated.
