Ludwig star Dipo Ola reveals his favourite episodes from long-awaited season 2

It's been almost two years, but finally David Mitchell's hit comedy-drama detective show Ludwig is back for season 2, as Mitchell's John takes on a new set of cases while continuing the investigation into his brother's disappearance.

Back in the cast alongside Mitchell are Anna Maxwell-Martin, Dylan Hughes, Dorothy Atkinson and Ralph Ineson, plus Dipo Ola who reprises his role as DI Russell Carter.

The detective is once again partnered up with John in season 2, but this time he knows his secret – that he spent their previous cases together pretending to be his brother.

Now, speaking with Radio Times, Ola has revealed his favourite cases from the upcoming run, and explained there is a personal reason for his first choice.

He said: "I think episode 3, just because one of my friends is in the show and she's in that episode. That was really, really fun for me. I got to spend time with her, and I haven't really been able, as of yet, to really work with some of my friends on shows that I'm doing.

"It was a really nice surprise when she told me she got the job, so that was a real highlight for me."

Ola continued: "Which I think is maybe the funnest? I think episode 1's theatre case is a really ingenious way of utilising a very popular puzzle."

The synopsis for episode says that "an unusual double confession at the theatre sees John take centre stage, where he must prove who didn’t commit the crime".

The synopsis continues: "The case takes a turn when John meets a key witness who appears to recognise him - and not because he’s Ludwig. Is there more to this witness than meets the eye?"

Ludwig season 2 sees a set of new stars join the cast, with Ben Ashenden and Rumi Sutton playing new detectives DS Ethan Cole and DC Caitlin Sullivan, while Mark Bonnar and Sian Clifford also take on key roles.

Ludwig season 2 will be on BBC One at 9pm on Thursday 20 August 2026, and will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer from the same date.
