Some parts of the Chicago area could see a low-end risk of severe weather Tuesday, with multiple rounds of thunderstorms firing up in the late afternoon and evening.
According to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes, the activity will remain fairly scattered.
“I do think most of the day we avoid the rain,” Jeanes said. “There’s a chance we don’t even get anything until after sunset.”
Up until about 4 p.m., conditions will be quiet and partly sunny, Jeanes said, with chances for rain going up about 5 p.m. The “greatest coverage” area will likely be across northeast Illinois through midnight, the National Weather Service said, while other areas could stay dry.
‘Marginal’ risk of severe weather
The Storm Prediction Center has placed the entire Chicago area Tuesday a “marginal” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level one of five. The biggest concern will be heavy downpours, Jeanes said, with some areas seeing multiple rounds of flash flooding and wind gusts as high as 60 mph.
Overall, the showers and storms were expected to stay “fairly scattered,” Jeanes said.
The severe weather threat comes as hundreds of thousands of people in northwest Indiana still remain without power, one week after a derecho blew through.
Temperatures will be in the 80s Tuesday, and cold front into the evening will bring temperatures Wednesday into the 70s.
“Temperatures will remain seasonably cool for mid to late August,” the NWS said.
