Israeli forces have continued their military escalation in southern Lebanon, targeting populated areas and towns with airstrikes, artillery shelling, house demolitions, and gunfire.
It is feared that these clashes could undermine the negotiation process and the framework agreement sponsored by the US.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health announced that the final death toll from the Israeli airstrike on the town of Ansar in Nabatieh district reached seven, including three children and two women, with two people injured.
The death toll from the airstrike on Deir al-Zahrani rose to four, with 17 injured, including a child and 11 women.
The total death toll was 11 people, including women and children, and 19 injured.
Warplanes and gunfire
According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, the assault began in the early hours of Saturday morning when Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes on the Al-Taher hill on the outskirts of Nabatieh al-Fawqa.
Two airstrikes also targeted the vicinity of the Teachers’ Training College and the Husseiniya, coinciding with phosphorus shelling.
Another airstrike targeted the valley between Ansar and Zrarieh, marking one of the deepest Israeli strikes inside Lebanese territory in nearly two months.
The escalation continued on Sunday with airstrikes on areas in the south and intensive overflights by warplanes and drones.
Lebanese media outlets confirmed hearing gunfire in the vicinity of the Al-Taher hills, amid Israeli attempts to reach the area and a movement of displaced people from Nabatieh al-Fawqa and Ansar.
In Bint Jbeil and the surrounding villages, Israeli occupation forces continued demolishing homes and firing heavy machine guns at houses along the Kounine-Saf al-Hawa road, following a raid targeting al-Mashaa neighborhood in the town of al-Mansouri.
The Israeli army announced on Saturday the assassination of a commander it identified as Abu-Hassan Alaa, describing him as a prominent leader in the Badr Brigade, during a raid in Deir al-Zahrani.
In response, Hezbollah issued a strongly worded statement holding Israel and the US responsible for the escalation, asserting that Washington provides “support and cover” for Israeli operations.
It called on the Lebanese authorities to “completely reassess their position” and cease relying on negotiations and American mediation.
Former Minister warns – this is not isolated
Former Lebanese minister Faisal Karami, head of the National Accord parliamentary bloc, and leader of the Karami Movement, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that what is happening in the south are not “isolated military operations.”
This is part of a long-term Israeli strategy aimed at killing civilians, destroying homes, burning and bulldozing land, and rendering some towns uninhabitable, in preparation – according to his assessment – for establishing a buffer zone and a sustainable occupation.
Karami added that internal political calculations in Israel play a role in this escalation.
As Israeli elections approach, security and war become part of the political battle, pushing Netanyahu to harden his stance and cling to his conditions, foremost among them the disarmament of Hezbollah and the imposition of a new geopolitical reality.
He warned that Lebanon is no longer separate from the regional confrontation, stating that Iran, the Strait of Hormuz, and oil have become interconnected elements in a single conflict, and that any escalation in the south could have repercussions on Hormuz and global energy markets.
Karami also called on Iran to keep Lebanon out of its regional calculations and conflicts, saying that Lebanon “can no longer tolerate being a battleground or a bargaining chip,” and that its relationship with Tehran, like with other countries, must return to a state-to-state relationship, allowing the Lebanese people to decide their own future, free from the region’s wars.
