East Rochester Gananda football looks to build off back-to-back successful seasons

EAST ROCHESTER, N.Y. — High school football practices are underway, and East Rochester/Gananda is looking to build on recent success as the two schools continue their combined program.

The Bombers won Section V Class C two years ago and reached the semifinals last season.

“It’s good. It’s exciting to kind of be back out here,” head coach Tim Rose said. “We’ve had a bunch of different team camps, but it’s not quite the same as doubles and the first official day of the season.”

And there’s reason to be excite for Tim Rose’s Bombers. The offense returns senior quarterback Robbie Dettman, while junior Owen Munding takes over at running back for long-time starter Ray’Davion Allen.

“I’m excited. I mean, I learned a lot from our old running back, Ray,” Munding said. “He was a big mentor for me, and I just use what he said and filling that role and getting the ball.”

Senior linemen Matthew Witkowski and Daniel Minguela are also back on the offensive line.

“Right now we got a really young team, but I think we could make something out of it,” Minguela said.

Some players are from East Rochester in Monroe County, while others are from Gananda in Wayne County. Wherever they’re from, they’ve known each other awhile.

“So they start out as kindergartners playing football together, and they come up through the system together and really learning that family bond of each other,” Rose said.

But outside of football, they do act as rivals.

“It’s exciting for me. I play basketball, so we get a little after it during the basketball season, but it’s a great coming together for these two towns,” Munding said.

“For a small school like Gananda, it’s cool,” Dettman said. “Like, meet new people, just get out, go do stuff.”

“Yeah. We may not all be together at school, but when we’re here, we’re brothers,” Witkowski said. “Really takes two different schools and just puts them together and creates one huge family, you know?”

The Bombers will play their first game of the year on Sept. 4 at home against Le Roy-Caledonia-Mumford.
