Numbers could provide a hint, but the people who stood strong during the lows are the best to tell how Devdutt Padikkal transformed his batting through a series of transitions.
Naseeruddin Mohammed, Devdutt Padikkal's personal coach, is among those few people who explain, via RevSportz, the detailed process that helped the left-handed batter to play the brilliant 167 against Sri Lanka in Galle in the ongoing India vs Sri Lanka Test match.
There was never any doubt about Padikkal's talent; the question was on his resilience and willingness to adapt to the conditions at the top level of the game. A couple of years back, when Josh Hazlewood dismissed him for only 25 in Perth, Padikkal had played only three innings before for India. He started his Test career with a half-century against England, then a duck and 25 against Australia.
He was only 24 when the selectors dropped him from the Test squad, a moment of upset for the emerging batter. Without the upset, the version of Padikkal the entire world witnessed on August 15 and August 16 might have remained unexplored.
The preparations in nets which repolished Devdutt Padikkal's batting to play against spin
Ahead of the ongoing Test series, in June-July, the 26-year-old travelled to Sri Lanka to play for the India A team in a couple of unofficial Tests. Those two matches helped the batter to absorb the conditions of Sri Lankan cricket. Experience, coupled with proper training in the nets, the formula behind the invention of Devdutt Padikkal 2.0.
"At the Karnataka Institute of Cricket (KIOC), we prepared pitches that would be similar in nature to those for the Tests in Sri Lanka. We had three left-arm spinners bowling to him in every session. We also used the red Kookaburra ball," Naseeruddin told RevSportz.
The coach observated a Padikkal adopted a different batting stance to counter the Sri Lankan spinners on the sluggish Galle pitch. The left-hander used to bat with a crouched batting stance; against Sri Lanka, to score his maiden Test century, the batter opted to take a stance on the middle ground.
The match that bolstered Devdutt Padikkal's self-belief
More than the technical adjustments in batting stance, Naseeruddin Mohammed mentioned a Ranji Trophy match when his student played a 120-run knock off 85 balls against Punjab in the previous season. He believes that that rapid innings provided Devdutt Padikkal the self-belief which he needed to upgrade his level.
"But besides technical tweaks, I would say the Ranji Trophy game against Punjab last season was a turning point in his red-ball career. He scored a match-winning hundred (120 off 85 balls in the second innings), which gave him the belief that he belongs in the longer format," he stated.
"Padikkal needed to regain his confidence. Also, getting the Karnataka captaincy mid-season during the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy contributed to him having a different mindset."
For a long time, the Indian cricket team has been in search of a batter who could make the No.3 batting position his own. If Padikkal continues to perform well, then he could be the missing piece of the unsolved puzzle.
