It’s official!Outlander star Caitriona Balfe will star in the upcoming live action film, Tangled. Though Balfe was not part of the D23 teaser footage on Friday, Aug. 14, Disney has confirmed that Balfe will play the role of Queen Arianna, Rapunzel’s birth mother, in the upcoming movie.
Fans of Balfe are overjoyed to hear the news and are excited to see her in this new role.
“I’m so happy they cast her,” one person wrote on Reddit.
“I seriously can’t wait, I’m a long time Outlander fan and she’s amazing,” someone else said.
“She will amaze in the reunion scene no doubt! I always rewatch the Outlander scene of her reuniting with her daughter, she is incredible with her eyes and posture,” a third Redditor predicted.
Rounding out the Tangled announcements were actors Elliot Cowan from The Crown as King Frederic, and Patrick and Hugo McPherson as the Stabbington twins, according to Deadline.
Disney previously confirmed that Teagan Croft will play Rapunzel, Milo Manheim will portray Flynn Rider, and Kathryn Hahn will take on Mother Gothel in the film, which is set for a March 2028 release.

Balfe is having a pretty incredible year and has six upcoming credits in the works. In addition to Tangled, Balfe will star in The Housekeeper, Ascension, Tenzing, A Long Winter, and Sense and Sensibility—co-starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Bodhi Rae Breathnach—which will hit theaters in October.
