When the dust settled, it was the host nation, the United States who extended its lead in the final medal table, amassing 50 pieces of hardware in all.
The stars n’ stripes collected 19 golds, 22 silvers and 9 bronze over the course of the four-day competition.
Behind America were the Australians, capturing 35 medals, including a remarkable 15 golds.
Canada rounded out the top three performing nations, earning 3 golds and 13 medals in all.
Despite missing several big guns, including Olympic champions Cameron McEvoy, Kyle Chalmers, Mollie O’Callaghan and Kaylee McKeown, Australia exceeded expectations, bringing home a historic Pan Pacs haul.
Lani Pallister stepped up big-time, adding the 800m free victory last night to her earlier wins in the 200m and 400m freestyle events.
Sam Short concluded his campaign with a massive swim to take the men’s 1500m free, downing the longstanding meet record held by legendary Australian Grant Hackett.
The men’s 50m free saw Jamie Jack get it done for gold, while Zac Stubblety-Cook posted a relatively surprise victory in the 200m breast to contribute to the Aussies’ impressive performance.
At the 2018 edition of the Pan Pacs, Australia was armed with the likes of Cate Campbell, Emma McKeon and Mitch Larkin. However, they only collected 8 golds at that last edition of this typically quadrennial meet. That makes this year’s gold total stand out even more, with rising stars making the most of the opportunity to race their primary rival, the United States.
But America was indeed too far ahead to catch in the medal tally, with the final night buoyed by Kate Douglass‘ massive World Record of 23.19 in the women’s 50m freestyle. The U.S. women’s medley relay then capped off the evening with a victory and a new championship record as a symbol of their success in Irvine this week.
