Power restoration efforts in Gary, Indiana, are back on after briefly pausing when a NIPSCO crew’s vehicle was shot at overnight, the utility said.
The vehicle, that was being used by NIPSCO crews to restore power so some of the thousands who’ve been in the dark since catastrophic storms hit days ago, was struck by gunfire Friday night, Gary Mayor Eddie Melton said.
NIPSCO said in a statement sent to NBC that it was “aware of a serious incident overnight in Gary involving our crews supporting our ongoing storm restoration efforts” and that “storm restoration activities involving crews have been temporarily paused in the city of Gary while we work with law enforcement and evaluate appropriate security measures to ensure the safety of our responders.”
Crews resumed working around 5 p.m. on Saturday “after close coordination” with local law enforcement, a NIPSCO spokesperson told NBC Chicago.
While the vehicle was damaged, no injuries were reported.
Video shared with NBC Chicago appears to show the NIPSCO vehicle that was shot at. Two large holes could be seen in the blown-out rear window of the vehicle and what appears to be at least two marks from bullets can be seen in the passenger side of the vehicle.
“Let me be clear: this type of violence is absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in the City of Gary,” said Mayor Eddie Melton. “These crews are here for one reason—to help our residents and restore electricity to families who have already endured days without power.”
Melton also announced there would be state troopers deployed to act as increased security for NIPSCO crews in light of the incident.

NIPSCO said the catastrophic storms caused “unprecedented” damage to the power grid and more than 300,000 customers — or 60% of NIPSCO’s customers — were without power at the height of the outages.
By Saturday morning, the number of customers affected had fallen to 158,000. Gary reported the most outages of any community, with more than 33,000 people still in the dark as of late Saturday morning.
