The 67th Annual Chicago Air and Water Show got off to a slow start on Saturday as spectators waited for mother nature to cooperate.
“I was disappointed when it started raining,” said Pranav Srikanth, who flew in early from India to catch the show.
Some people told NBC Chicago they were seeing the show for the first time at North Avenue Beach.
“I want to see them [Thunderbirds] fly close to the water, it seems pretty fun and cool,” said one young attendee.
Timothy Bailey brought his wife and two kids to hear the roaring engines over the city he calls home.
“I always tell people all the time Chicago is the place to be,” he said.
The show was delayed by about an hour and a half. Organizers said low ceiling conditions in Gary, Indiana, pushed back several performances, including the Golden Knights.
“That’s a bummer hopefully they can jump in later of the show,” said Srikanth.
Once the weather cleared up, the show went on.
“We’re a little drier now and yeah, we’re here to experience it all,” said Joseph Stenta.
Stenta is attending with his fiancé and aunt.
“I grew up in Cicero we used to come here all the time,” he said. “It’s just a great tradition to come here and see it again and see the experience on her [fiancé] face.”
His aunt, Tina Bink said the show brings back a flood of memories.
“My husband and I use to come down every year and stuff and I haven’t been because he passed away,” she said.
She’s excited to see the big jets.
“The thunder of the jets is amazing that’s what I like when you feel it in your chest, the rumble, then you can hear it off the buildings that’s my favorite part,” she said.
It’s the largest free show of its kind in the country, featuring top civilian and military pilots and aircraft. Despite the delay, those in attendance said it was worth the wait.
“I love it because I love aviation,” said Jordan Zakheim, from Chicago. “I just wish I could fly in one of these birds. One day I hope I can get a ride in one of these definitely.”
Gary, Indiana, canceled its air show scheduled for next weekend to keep all efforts focused on recovering from damage and power outages left behind by catastrophic storms this week.
