Marsh’s most lasting work came in 1979 with Born to Run: The Bruce Springsteen Story, the first major biography of the artist and a New York Times bestseller. He was an early champion of Springsteen’s music, writing about him in Creem before much of the critical world caught on, and he went on to write Rolling Stone‘s first Springsteen cover story. He revisited and expanded the book multiple times over the following decades.
Springsteen wasn’t his only subject. Marsh authored more than two dozen books over his career, including biographies of Elvis Presley and The Who, along with The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made. In 1993, he shared a Grammy Award for his album notes on Aretha Franklin’s Queen of Soul.
In 2004, Marsh joined SiriusXM, hosting Kick Out the Jams for 19 years and helping launch E Street Radio. His longtime co-host, Jim Rotolo, confirmed his death in a social media post, writing simply, “Rest easy, Dave. Thank you for everything, my friend.”
Marsh’s influence reached beyond music criticism into activism, where he spent decades advocating for health care access, cancer research and social justice. Musician Tom Morello once called him “a tireless advocate of justice, human rights and rock ‘n’ roll.”
Marsh is survived by his wife, Barbara Carr, Springsteen’s longtime co-manager. He was predeceased by his daughters, Kristen Ann Carr and Sasha Carr.
