ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – The 2025 Monroe football season was one for the books as the Red Jackets made history, winning the Class B State Championship. Their top player was wide receiver Messiah Hampton.
Hampton is now off to Eugene, OR, where he will suit up at WR for the Ducks and continue his football career in college. Monroe returns many outstanding players, like quarterback Pooty Cunningham, who has picked up a handful of Division I offers, and offensive lineman Alijah Jones, who will play for Rutgers in the fall of 2027.
Those returners were grateful for what Hampton brought, but are seeking a repeat without their former star playmaker.
“This is something that I’ve been looking forward to my whole life,” said Cunningham. “I knew that coming into last season, people were gonna say certain stuff. But we also gotta remember that we are the ones actually putting in the work.”
“One thing that everybody would say if they are hating on Monroe, is they couldn’t do it without Messiah. We’re obviously trying to prove them wrong, but at the end of the day we got our eyes set on one thing which are back to back state titles,” said Jones.
Obviously, no Hampton will change some things, but the Red Jackets really do bring back a tough team filled with other Division I talent. They may need to find more creative ways to do that in 2026, but the goal is still laid out in front of them.
“This season we really have something to prove. It’s a lot of people that say, because of Messiah, obviously. But I want to prove that we can do it without him too,” said Cunningham.
Monroe football opens the 2026 season at Edison on Sat. Sept. 5 at Noon. In 2025, Edison fell victim to Monroe, 70-0.
