Disney Shares First Look at Major Redesign For Iconic 62-Year-Old Attraction

Disney is preparing for some major changes at its iconic Magic Kingdom theme park.

In addition to sharing new details about upcoming new park areas like the Cars-themed Piston Peak National Park and the mysterious Villains Land, WDW News Today confirmed an inside look at the new refurbishments to the beloved Tomorrowland staple, Carousel of Progress.

According to the website, Disney is set to upgrade the fan-favorite Disney attraction by pushing its central narrative back to the latter days of the 20th century.

As part of the new overhaul, Disney provided a first look at the various scenes, outfits, characters and settings for the refurbished version of the ride, all of which mark some sweeping changes to the Carousel of Progress’s usual presentation.

Reopening in 2027, Carousel of Progress has experienced six major iterations since its initial debut at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. Over the years, the company has updated the attraction to help keep the Carousel’s settings and characters relevant among modern audiences, with its last overhaul coming in 1993.

The new version of the ride will specifically cover a number of new scenes and settings, moving from the 1960s, to Halloween in the 1980s, to New Year’s Eve in 1999, to the distant future of tomorrow, characterized by off-planet human colonies and robotic assistants.

For those upset by some of the changes in store for the ride, fret not! The lovable canine companion Rover will remain a part of the new Carousel of Progress, as will it as its famous theme song, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” written by the legendary Sherman brothers.

Perhaps most interestingly, the new version of the Carousel of Progress will also feature an opening scene with the first-ever audio-animatronic of Walt Disney, inspired by his appearance at the 1964 World’s Fair discussing his original vision for the attraction.
