Contract Details, Tennis for 98, USA Goalies, Vegas’ New Logo, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The marvelous Sean McIndoe dropped a fresh edition of his Red Light Newsletter at The Athletic on Thursday. There wasn’t a lot of Blackhawks-specific content in it, but there was some fascinating and valuable minutiae in it that is worth sharing.

McIndoe was asked if offer sheets could include other elements, specifically a no-trade or no-move clause. The answer to that is yes. Even if an offer sheet does not include one, the player can’t be traded for a full year if the initial team matches. But offer sheets can afford a player that option. Which brings us to his next point, which brought up Connor Bedard‘s new contract with the Blackhawks.

Bedard’s new extension barely contains any no-trade protection either. He has a no-move clause in the fifth year of his five-year deal, but that’s it. The Hawks are completely free to trade him anywhere they want until 2030.

Why? Because no player can have any trade protection in his contract until he would otherwise qualify for UFA status. That typically happens after a player’s seventh season. So, in the case of Carlsson and Bedard, both of whom debuted in 2023, they’re not eligible for no-trade (or no-movement) clauses until 2030-31. Even if their teams were willing to give them protection before then, the league wouldn’t allow it.

It looks like Bedard got together with former teammate MacKenzie Entwistle to catch the women’s final at the National Bank Open in Toronto. Iga Swiatek claimed the win over Elena Rybakina 6-2, 6-3 for those keeping score at home. Did you buy tickets to Blackhawks games when they hit the market on Thursday? Which games will you be attending this season? A really good piece from Jesse Granger dropped Friday morning at The Athletic looking at the current dominant run of American-born goalies, a group that includes Blackhawks netminder Spencer Knight. Granger was at USA Hockey’s National Goaltending Symposium in Boston last week. Recommended reading. Here’s another part of the conversation Jonny Lazerus had with Blackhawks prospect Mason West this week.

    — USHL (@USHL) August 13, 2026 Elite Prospects indicates Blackhawks’ goalie prospect Ilya Kanarsky will be with Lada Togliatti in the KHL this season. Kanarsky was a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. The Vegas Golden Knights introduced a tenth anniversary logo that’s got some gaming elements to it. I can’t believe it’s been ten years of hockey in Sin City. (Related: earlier this morning I shared the Blackhawks’ history in expansion drafts going all the way back to the Sharks joining the club.)

    — Vegas Golden Knights (@GoldenKnights) August 13, 2026 An old friend alert: former Blackhawks assistant general manager Jeff Greenberg, who is currently the GM of the Detroit Tigers (yes, MLB), has been linked to the Detroit Red Wings opening. That would be a fascinating move considering the same family owns both teams. Another old friend alert from the USHL on Thursday. Colby Cohen has been named the USHL’s Vice President of Hockey and Player Experience. Congrats! Here’s what he’ll be doing, per the USHL release:

“The newly formed role will serve as the League’s senior hockey operations leader and chief steward of the USHL player experience. Working closely with teams, players, USA Hockey, the NCAA, and the National Hockey League (NHL), Cohen will lead initiatives that strengthen player development and experience, hockey operations, and competitive integrity across the USHL.”

    — USHL (@USHL) August 13, 2026 Finally, this isn’t directly hockey or Blackhawks related. But so many of us are fans of specific teams because our parents introduced us to the game/team. Last night, Major League Baseball hosted their Field of Dreams game in Iowa between the Twins and Phillies. It’s always a fun game to watch with the corn as a backdrop for a game that the players say feels like playing travel ball or Little League all over again. But clips of current and former major leaguers playing catch with their dads/kids hit me in the feels pretty hard. So a Friday shoutout to all of the parents out there who led us to the game(s) and teams we love.
