Channel 4 has confirmed that the future of Virgin Island is undecided, amid tabloid speculation that the programme is facing the axe.
The show, which sees a line-up of adult virgins follow a hands-on programme to take their first steps towards intimacy, aired its second season earlier this year and previous reports suggested that the team behind the series were beginning to work on a third outing.
However, the show has been put on hold while Channel 4 recruits its new director of programmes, a spokesperson for the channel confirmed to Radio Times.
The spokesperson said: "Virgin Island has not yet been recommissioned because, as has been widely reported, recruitment for our new director of programmes is still under way.
"It is only right that outstanding commissioning decisions about big returning series be made once the full team is in place."
Virgin Island has been a huge ratings hit for Channel 4, with season 1 proving to be the channel’s biggest streaming hit of the year in 2025, though some people have questioned the show's ethics and whether the personal journey of losing one's virginity should be shown on TV.
While a third season is yet to be commissioned, show expert Dr Danielle Harel previously shared her ideas for another instalment, should it be confirmed.
During an appearance on the Spill with Will podcast, Harel said: "I think one of the things you don’t see on Virgin Island yet – and we hope to see on season 3 – is gay men taking part in the show. We have a gay therapist waiting."
She continued: "We have all the therapists everyone needs to get help, both surrogates and body workers who are prepared to do that."
