Egypt expands commercial navy with two giant cargo vessels

Egypt took a significant step in its bid to dominate Red Sea and Mediterranean trade routes on Friday, taking delivery of two massive 82,000-ton dry bulk carriers from China’s New Hantong Shipyard.

The vessels—named the Wadi El-Nile and Wadi El-Qamar—were officially handed over to Egypt’s National Navigation Company (NNC) during a ceremony in China attended by Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir.

The addition of the Kamsarmax-class giants brings NNC’s active fleet to 16 vessels. Measuring 229 meters in length, both ships feature state-of-the-art fuel-efficiency designs aimed at reducing operating costs across international shipping lanes.

    A Broader Maritime Strategy

The delivery is part of a aggressive campaign by Cairo to revitalize its merchant navy and position the country as a global transit and logistics powerhouse.

Key targets outlined by the Transport Ministry include:

Expanding the State Fleet: Reaching 40 fully state-owned vessels by 2030 across subsidiary lines (including NNC, Arab Bridge Maritime, and Cairo Ferries), boosting national cargo capacity to 30 million tons annually.

Port Expansion: Increasing commercial ports to 19 across the Mediterranean and Red Sea, expanding total port land to 100 million square meters.

Infrastructure Upgrades: Adding 70 km of deep-water berths (18–25 meter depths), constructing 35 km of breakwaters, and scaling the tugboat fleet to 80 units.

    Self-Financed Modernization

NNC Managing Director Mohamed Soliman Moteleb highlighted that the company plans to take delivery of two additional twin bulk carriers by 2028. Notably, NNC is self-funding this expansion, which will modernize 54% of its fleet in under four years—a record timeline for the state operator.

The partnership with New Hantong previously yielded the Wadi El-Arish, a sister ship delivered in January 2024 that is currently operational.
