The India National Cricket Team will be up against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team for a two-match Test series, with the first Test match scheduled to take place on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium, Galle. Ahead of the first Test match, Team India captain Shubman Gill has provided updates on Sai Sudharsan and speedster Jasprit Bumrah’s injuries.
India have been in poor form in the red-ball format during the World Test Championship cycle (2025-27), having lost two back-to-back home series against the SENA countries. They are currently fifth in the WTC 2025-27 standings, having won four and lost four of their nine matches, with one draw. This is a must-win series for Shubman Gill and his boys.
Ahead of the game on Saturday, Shubman Gill, while speaking at the press conference, provided an update on Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan’s injuries. The two have been ruled out of the series, and Bumrah’s ruling out has been a big loss for Shubman Gill as he has been India’s best pacer across formats. Gill has been in constant touch with them.
"There is a constant communication with them. Unfortunately Sai Sudharsan did not improve as much as we liked as we can't take risks in Tests. But we are confident of our 15", Shubman Gill said as quoted by PTI.
"It's an opportunity for someone to step up"- Shubman Gill on Jasprit Bumrah's absence
Gill, on Bumrah missing out on the series, said it is a good opportunity for other pacers to step up and showcase their talent. He believes it is more about understanding the pace of the game, as Mohammed Siraj is the only experienced pacer in the line-up, and he is the one who will lead the pace attack.
"Jasprit Bumrah is not here but it's an opportunity for someone to step up. It's all about understanding the pace of the game," Gill said on the absence of Bumrah and inexperience in India's bowling.
India has a prolonged injury list
Jasprit Bumrah has been missing out on the series because he suffered a knee injury during the three-match ODI series against England. He returned to the 50-over format of the game after 968 days, got injured during the 2nd ODI match in Cardiff, and was ruled out of the series with a swollen knee. Post that, he has not recovered and thus is missing out on the Test series.
Sai Sudharsan had a right big toe stress fracture/stress reaction. He suffered the injury during the India A tour of Sri Lanka in July and underwent rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, though he was added to the squad but was subjected to fitness tests which he could not clear and was ruled out.
Apart from these two, several other cricketers have been doing their rehab at the CoE, citing various injuries, as the Centre of Excellence has been called a ‘mini hospital’ at present, with the likes of Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy, Washington Sundar, and Harshit Rana among the most famous names.
