ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Memorial Art Gallery hosted its first-ever block party in Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts.
People gathered inside the gallery on University Avenue for art activities and yoga workshops alongside live music and food. Organizers said there will be more free events to come next year.
“So, we’re celebrating all things that bring the community together. This exhibition, you know, early in its planning process, really came from a spirit of engaging with the community, working with partners, and we wanted to celebrate that,” said Allison Goodwin, director of academic and community programs at the Memorial Art Gallery.
She added that the event was inspired by John Rhoden, a sculptor. “We wanted to celebrate this amazing artist, who really didn’t get the credit he deserved when he was sculpting, and this evening, we have all sorts of movement-based activities, really gaining inspiration from John Rhoden’s work. It’s really sculptural, gestural, celebrates the human body, human form,” Goodwin explained.
The gallery’s admission will be free starting next year after raising $9 million back in May.
