Swimming not advised: Elevated E. coli levels at 3 NW Indiana beaches prompts warning

Indiana Dunes National Park officials warned against swimming at three beaches because of elevated E. coli levels on Thursday.

Testing done the day prior showed E. coli levels that exceeded water quality standards for swimming at Central, Porter beach and Portage lakefront, officials said.

“Enjoy these spots from the shore only! All other national park waters are safe for swimming for now,” Indiana Dunes National Park officials said in social media post on Thursday morning.

Testing will again be done at the impacted beaches and officials said they will release updated reports.

Despite the elevated E. coli levels, the beaches will remain open because the National Park Service does not shut down beach access “solely due to elevated bacteria levels,” officials said.

“Beaches stay open even if bacteria levels are high, so plan your visit with safety in mind—check water quality, weather, and other updates!” officials said.

Officials also said on Thursday that the park’s Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education will be closed until Aug. 19 and all public programs are canceled until further notice because of damage from severe storms this week.

“Several parts of the park are inaccessible due to the weather event from August 11th.It is not advisable to go in the lake after a heavy rain. Use extreme caution when visiting as most locations have no power and are out of service,” officials said.
