Will Smith’s Former ‘King Richard’ Co-Star Defends His Oscars Slap

Will Smith’s King Richard co-star Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is standing by the actor after his 2022 Oscars slap.

During the now-famous pop culture moment, Smith climbed onto the Oscars stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock after Rock made an unscripted joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss (it is a side effect of her alopecia). Although Smith won the award for Best Actor for his role as Richard Williams soon afterward, he was subsequently banned from the Academy Awards for 10 years.

While appearing on an August 12 episode of The Daily Beast’s Obsessed podcast, Ellis-Taylor — who played Venus and Serena Williams’ mother, Oracene “Brandy” Price, in King Richard — explained why she still defends the actor’s response.

“I know that [Smith] wanted to protect his wife,” she said. “I stand by that. I stand with him for that.”

The actress explained that, in her opinion, the First Amendment protecting Americans’ right to free speech shouldn’t “necessarily protect assholes.”

“I’m from the state of Mississippi, and people have used First Amendment right protections to defend the Confederate flag,” she continued. “I know blanket First Amendment valorization. I don’t buy into that. To say the least, it needs to be nuanced, and you can’t use it as an excuse to harm someone.”

Ellis-Smith went on to remember working with Smith on King Richard fondly, noting that although many A-list stars “don’t give a f–k about anybody but themselves,” the actor didn’t behave that way “at all.”

“Will took care of everybody. Everybody,” she continued. “Not just me because I played his wife, not just his [onscreen] daughters because we were in close proximity to him, but background artists. He just would not allow anybody to be treated poorly in his presence. And I cannot tell you how rare that is in this job.”
