Multiple school districts in northwest Indiana are being forced to cancel classes after a derecho hammered the region Tuesday, and Chicago-area schools are dealing with similar issues.
Lake Central Corporation schools, which began instruction on Tuesday just in time for the powerful storm system to blast through the region, announced that it will continue canceling classes on Thursday and Friday after missing instruction on Wednesday.
The powerful storms knocked out power to nearly all of Lake County, with wind speeds of 100 miles per hour reported during a derecho that swept through the Chicago area.
Hobart, Indiana schools were also not in session Wednesday for their first scheduled day of classes, and they won’t have class on Thursday either.
Glenwood Academy in suburban Glenwood is also scrambling to clean up storm damage in the wake of Tuesday’s storms, though they’re adamant they plan to be ready for the start of the new school year next week.
“We need a break. That’s all I can say is we need a break,” CEO Coleen Carter said. “Our goal is to get the kids back on Sunday evening and school on Monday that’s still our goal.”
Marian Catholic High School in suburban Chicago Heights has been targeted not once but a staggering three times by severe thunderstorms in the last 10 days, and they’ve been forced to close their campus to deal with the damage.
“You know all the main utilities are a problem for us right now which is why the campus is closed until we can get those back up and running,” President Michael Riordan said.
The school’s gym was inundated with water after part of its roof was ripped off by the derecho on Tuesday.
“First thing we saw were tree branches down,” Riordan said. “We had a couple light posts down and then we walked into the gym, which was underwater, and so realized right away that there was significant damage on the roof and water was literally pouring in.”
During Tuesday’s derecho, there were at least five tornadoes confirmed around the Chicago area, with at least one of those gaining EF-2 strength with wind speeds in excess of 110 miles per hour.
Still more severe weather could be in the forecast, with showers and storms possible again on Thursday and Friday, leaving officials only hoping they can avoid the worst of the weather as they try to open buildings again.
