ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – As a golfer, I was a bit amazed at the initiative from RDGA going on at Genesee Valley Golf Course on Wednesday. The three day camp is aimed at teaching golf to kids in underserved communities in the Rochester area. But not only had some of the kids participating never picked up a golf club before the camp – some hadn’t even seen a golf hole before.
Luckily, the camp covers all of the basics – putting, chipping, and full swings – with a little bit in between too.
“Complete beginners in a lot of cases here,” said RDGA Executive Director, Tim Vangellow. “It brings a lot of joy to our faces and the faces of our volunteers to see joy on the kids’ faces.”
And yes, for the most part, the campers really have enjoyed learning a new sport.
“It just insprires me. It’s a great fun game,” said camper Jeremiah Peterson.
“Unlike any other sport, this sport actually requires patience,” said camper Elias Bentley.
The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday and campers won’t just get a chance to see a golf hole (although they will tour the 10th hole at GVGC). They’ll all get to put their newfound skills to the test and play the long par 4.
If there was any way to grow the game, the RDGA surely cracked the code.
