The Indiana State Fair will be closed for the rest of the day Wednesday due to severe thunderstorms and flash flooding in the state’s capital.
According to officials, a squall line of severe thunderstorms raced through the Indianapolis area on Wednesday, and the heavy rain has led to flooding on the fairgrounds, forcing the closure of the fair for the remainder of the day.
“If you are currently on the fairgrounds, please make your way home safely,” officials said in a social media post.
While officials have not officially announced plans for Thursday, the Facebook post said the plan is to reopen on Thursday pending damage assessments around the fairgrounds.
Severe weather also impacted the fair on Tuesday, closing the gates to the fairgrounds for several hours before festivities resumed just before 5:30 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service, more than an inch of rain fell in the Indianapolis area within a short period of time on Wednesday, exacerbating the soggy conditions that were present after Tuesday’s severe weather.
Severe weather is still possible both Thursday and Friday according to the Storm Prediction Center, with the Indianapolis area at a “marginal” risk of severe storms on both days.
