ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York said a Pittsford father and son have been given multiple fraud and ID theft charges after being accused of a credit card scam that amounted to over $2 million stolen.
The office announced on Wednesday that a federal grand jury returned a 19-count indictment, charging 75-year-old Talib Hussain and 48-year-old Mirza Khan with conspiracy to commit bank fraud, wire fraud, access device fraud, and aggravated identity theft.
Officials say between 2012 and July 23, 2024, Hussain and Kahn, along with other suspects, ran a “synthetic identity fraud scheme.” The duo illegally took valid Social Security numbers from real people, using the numbers to create fake identities without the owners’ knowledge, the attorney’s office added.
Hussain and Kahn submitted around 1,072 online applications to financial institutions for credit and debit cards, and the office reported that they would rent apartments in the Western New York area, using the locations as mailing addresses for the cards. After getting the cards, the two, along with other suspects, would buy items at stores such as Apple, BJ’s, and Sam’s Club, as well as at their own businesses, including Lucky Beverage, Chili Express Mart, and Easy Food Market, officials say.
The cards were also used to pay property taxes at three locations, later using fake checks to pay for the card balances, according to the attorney’s office.
Officials added that the victims were also affected by the failure to pay the full balances on their cards, damaging their credit ratings. American Express, Bank of America, Barclays Bank Delaware, Capital One, JPMorgan Chase Bank, Citibank, Comenity Bank, Discover Bank, First National Bank of Omaha, Synchrony Bank, and US Bank were impacted. In total, the banks lost approximately $2,257,697.
The charges carry a maximum sentence of up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
