Fashion Outlets of Chicago reverses pay-to-park policy at suburban mall

Fashion Outlets of Chicago reversed its pay-to-park policy after major backlash from shoppers and retailers.

The popular Rosemont mall walked back the paid parking program rolled out earlier this year and starting Wednesday began offering free parking for the first three hours to all guests, no purchase or validation required, a representative of Macerich, the mall’s owner, said in a statement sent to NBC Chicago.

Previously, the first hour was free, but after that, daily parking rates range from $13 for one to three hours; $20 for three to 12 hours and $50 for 12 to 24 hours. There was also the option of free parking with validation for shoppers spending between one and three hours at the mall, but it required spending a minimum of $100.

“We listened to feedback from the community and our retailers,” the Macerich representative said.

The change keeps Macerich and the Fashion Outlets of Chicago “on track with our original goal of making it easier for shoppers and diners to visit our stores and restaurants while still discouraging long-term parking from non-shoppers,” the representative said.

Fashion Outlets of Chicago isn’t the only suburban mall to recently start charging for parking. Oakbrook Center Mall introduced some paid priority parking spots earlier this year, though the majority of the mall parking remains free and the rates start at $3 per hour.
