Further casting has been confirmed for Netflix's upcoming animated film Charlie vs the Chocolate Factory, with a host of big name actors joining the already announced Kit Connor (Heartstopper) and Taika Waititi (Klara and the Sun).
Joining the cast of the series are Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton), Charithra Chandran (One Piece), Samson Kayo (F1: The Movie), Christopher Chung (Slow Horses), Kate Winslet (Avatar: Fire and Ash) and Helena Bonham Carter (Enola Holmes 3).
It has also been confirmed that the film will be released globally in cinemas 5 November 2027, with a Netflix release coming on 22 December 2027.
The synopsis for the film, which will be directed by Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan, and executive produced by Waititi, says: "Willy Wonka (Waititi) has spent the years since the Golden Ticket contest behind bars (not the chocolate kind) for the crime of turning a child into a blueberry."
The synopsis continues: "Having served his time, Wonka returns to his factory determined to add a little sweetness to a bitter world. But one thing stands in his way: teenager Charlie Paley (Connor) and his friends.
"Facing eviction, this next generation of "rotten" kids plot to break into the factory, nab a priceless Wonka Bar, and save their homes. But like many before them who enter the fantastical world of the factory, these kids are in for a bit more than they can chew..."
When the film was first announced, directors Stern and Bogan said in a statement: "Having been raised on the delightfully twisted world of Willy Wonka, it’s a privilege to bring his continued adventures to life as twisted adults.
"And how sweet to do it like never before via the magic of animation, creating a Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory that’s more deliciously unhinged than your wildest imagination. If we do a rotten job, you can throw us down a rubbish chute!"
Charlie vs the Chocolate Factory will be released in cinemas on 5 November 2027 and on Netflix on 22 December 2027. You can sign up to Netflix from £5.99 a month. Netflix is also available on Sky TV and Virgin Media.
