Residents described frightening moments on Tuesday after powerful storms ripped through Chicago’s south suburbs, including Country Club Hills.
The National Weather Service said two tornadoes tore through the region, including one that hit southern Cook County from near Orland Park toward Flossmoor and another from Monee through Crete in Will County.
In the hours following, the McGee family said they were still shaken by the ordeal.
“There was actually a tornado in my backyard earlier today,” Carlos McGee said. “We saw the winds and ran down to the basement.”
One tree, he said, was uprooted and moved by about 20 feet.
After the storms, the family rode through the neighborhood and got a look at the widespread damage.
A few blocks away, Lorene Bills’ house wasn’t spared.
“When the clouds come from this area and gets real dark, I get my to-go bag,” she recalled.
With her purse, phone and wallet, Bills went down in the basement.
“We were down in the basement, and we heard it. Boom!” she said.
Bills said storms left two holes in her deck and knocked her grill upside down.
In nearby Tinley Park, the round of severe weather caused significant damage to the Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre.
Video captured by NBC Chicago’s Sky 5 helicopter showed a portion of the roof had been blown off and debris was scattered across the lawn.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is scheduled to perform at the amphitheater on Saturday. However, it’s unclear if the concert will go on as planned.
