An artful dodger, he tries everything he can think of to escape his increasingly dangerous bombing missions, even feigning illness and insanity. The problem is that the number of missions he’s required to fly keeps increasing.
Caught in a hopeless, paradoxical trap, Yossarian is at the mercy of the bureaucratic military rule known as "catch-22," which states that a pilot who asks to be grounded because he’s crazy is actually demonstrating rational concern for his safety, in turn proving he must be sane. In other words, the very act of trying to escape the rule proves that Yossarian doesn’t qualify for an escape.
"I was lying in bed in my four-room apartment on the West Side when suddenly this line came to me: 'It was love at first sight. The first time he saw the chaplain, Someone fell madly in love with him,'" Heller once said in an interview with The Paris Review, adding "As soon as the opening sentence was available, the book began to evolve clearly in my mind."
Using dark humor and nonlinear storytelling, Heller exposes the madness and cold bureaucracy of war. But his at-times crude prose initially threw off some critics. Commercially, the response was mixed as well. Upon publication, it sold a modest 30,000, per The New York Times. However, the novel exploded in popularity in the U.K. and through word of mouth among U.S. college students.
As the Vietnam War intensified, the novel’s antiwar satire resonated particularly strongly with the counterculture and a new generation of young readers. Since then, it’s sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, per Audible, and is widely regarded as a 20th-century masterpiece. It was only a matter of time before it found its way onto the screen.
The novel inspired several visual and theatrical adaptations, first with a feature film in 1970 directed by Mike Nichols and followed by a 1973 television pilot starring Richard Dreyfuss. More than four decades later, George Clooneybrought the story back to television in 2019.
Hulu’s Catch-22, a comedy thriller that stays loyal to Heller’s original tone, saw Clooney wear multiple hats, including executive producer, director, and star, as Lieutenant Scheisskopf, one of the ambitious yet incompetent military training commanders. Created by Luke Davies and David Michod and co-starring Christopher Abbott and Kyle Chandler, the series was nominated for two Emmys.
Sixty-five years after its publication, Catch-22 remains as relevant as ever. Heller's fictional rule has become a phrase embedded in everyday language, while the novel itself continues to find new generations of readers.
