At least 2 tornadoes touched down during Tuesdays destructive storms: NWS

Two tornadoes ripped through the Chicago area on Tuesday as dangerous and devastating storms pummeled parts of the region, bringing wind gusts of up to 100 miles per hour and widespread damage, the National Weather Service said.

The agency said damage surveys were ongoing at 5 p.m. but two tornadoes had been confirmed:

Eastern Will County from near Monee through Crete. Damage was consistent with up to an EF-1 tornado. Southern Cook County (and possibly parts of Will County) from near southern Orland Park toward Flossmoor. The NWS said damage indicated at least an EF-1 tornado.

As of the evening, crews were continuing to assess damage in southern Cook County and eastern Will County and making their way toward northwest Indiana.

The cleanup followed fast-moving systems that swept into the region before 10 a.m., with the most severe conditions easing by noon.

The storms forced some downtown Chicago high-rises to urge those inside to seek shelter. Popular tourist destination Navy Pier had guests and tenants sheltering in place in a parking garage during the storms.
