Chicago Bears safety Coby Bryant’s injury during a practice may cost him more time than first thought.
Head Coach Ben Johnson told reporters Tuesday that Bryant required knee surgery and is estimated to miss anywhere from four to six months.
“Got to see him today. He had surgery on Friday and looks like he’s going to be more of a four to six-month timeline. And so, you know, he’s going to be in a hurry to get back to help us out there at the end of the year,” Johnson said.
Bryant was carted off the practice field earlier this month at Halas Hall after suffering an injury.
Bryant, who signed a three-year deal with the Bears during the offseason, was working in one-on-one drills in Lake Forest when he went down with what appeared to be a non-contact injury, according to multiple reports.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter initially reported the team expected Bryant to miss eight to 10 weeks after suffering multiple injuries in his knee. At the time, surgery was not expected.
“Coby’s the template for how we all want our team to play. Like this is, he was a big part of offense, defense, and special teams. The mentality, the mindset, his approach,” Johnson said. “So yeah, it certainly takes us back a little bit, but it also provides opportunity for other guys to fill that void.”
Bryant was a key component of the Seattle Seahawks’ defense last season as the team earned a Super Bowl championship. The talented defensive back had four interceptions and 41 combined tackles during the regular season for the Seahawks, and he figures to eventually be a key contributor to a Bears defense that also added rookie Dillon Thieneman at the NFL Draft.
