ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We’re remaining “green” on the Threat Tracker, but we are tracking a few opportunities for some showers and thunder this week. Our mainly clear sky will continue into Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, leading to a nice start to the day. The one caveat is that we’ll likely see more elevated wildfire smoke. This means we’ll see it in the sky, making our sun a little hazy, but we should have little impact at ground level, so little to no issues with our air quality. Some clouds will begin to move back in Wednesday afternoon and evening, with an increasing chance for some scattered showers and isolated thunder developing toward dinner-time. This should tend to fizzle after sunset, with clouds gradually clearing Wednesday night.
Thursday will feature another chance for a few showers, though much of the day looks dry. Friday looks good with the sky becoming mostly sunny once again. The weekend will be split, with sunshine and comfortable and dry weather on Saturday. Sunday will turn wet with rain likely and the risk for a few storms.
Aside from any precipitation, we’re also watching the sky for a few celestial events. First, Rochester will see a partial solar eclipse Wednesday afternoon. The eclipse will begin at 12:57, peak at 1:43PM, and end 2:28PM. While cloud cover will be starting to move in at that point, we should still be able to see some pockets of clear sky and the sun. Don’t forget – if you do plan on trying to see the eclipse, you MUST use eye protection! If you still have solar eclipse glasses from our total eclipse a few years back, use those! The Perseid meteor shower peaks Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Once again, viewing conditions won’t be ideal, with some clouds still around from the evening’s showers. But, we expect some clearing in the sky. So if you want to try to see the meteor shower, go ahead! Try to get away from lights (even just turning off house/outdoor lights), and give your eyes a few minutes to adjust to the dark. Then look up!
