An entire town in northwest Indiana was left without power after intense and damaging storms rolled across the region on Tuesday, authorities said.
Police in Schererville, Indiana, said power in the entire town was out and urged residents to “stay put and stay off the roadways” in a post on social media around 1 p.m. CT.
“As of now, the entire town is out of power. We urge everyone to stay put and stay off the roadways, if at all possible. We will try our best to keep everyone updated whenever power is restored. 911 lines are working properly, and are for emergency calls only,” Schererville police said.
High winds from the powerful and damaging storms caused several semi-trucks to roll over on busy roadways and interstates in northwest Indiana, Sgt. Glen Fifield with the Indiana State Police Lowell Post told NBC Chicago.
“We’ve got two rolled over semis. We have one that was down near Lowell on the northbound side of I-65, and another one here southbound at U.S. 30, just north of U.S. 30,” he said. “That’s causing problems.”
In addition to the overturned semis, Fifield said power lines were down north of I-94, which shut down both directions of I-65 north of I-94 and south of U.S. 20.
As of roughly 2 p.m., more than 283,000 NIPSCO customers and more than 270,000 ComEd customers were without power, according to data provided by the utility companies.
Major damage was also reported in the south suburbs of Chicago, including along and south of 183rd Street in Tinley Park, authorities said. Roofs were blown off and windows blown in and “there are several thousand without power,” Pat Carr, Tinley Park village manager, said.
Frankfort resident Jean Miller shared video with NBC Chicago of a possible tornado spinning up debris in their south suburban yard as damaging storms blew through.
Orland Park resident James Hill also caught a video of heavy downpours and strong winds rolling through the south suburban area.
