Johnson revealed he grew up surrounded by music and "a lot of singing" tied to his Polynesian parents and culture. Since childhood, he was inspired by some of the greatest musicians like Sam Cooke, but he reveals Nelson holds a special place for a big reason.
“At a very early age, my deep influences were Sam Cooke, Elvis, George Jones, Merle Haggard, even Johnny Paycheck. Guys like that who just were on top of their genres, and also Willie Nelson, who, as a matter of fact, gave me my first guitar,” he told Rolling Stone.
“You know the Trigger guitar he has? The historic one? I guess Martin only made 100 of those, and as a birthday gift, ’cause I was such a huge fan, he gave me one of those. I mean, I play like dog s--- compared to him, but it’s still a cool gift. Anyway, that’s my musical start.”
The guitar he's referring to is infamously used by Nelson throughout his career and is a modified Martin N-20 nylon-string classical acoustic guitar. The instrument was the result of Nelson's Baldwin guitar having been damaged in 1969 after a drunk man stepped on it. He tested multiple guitars from different brands until landing on a Martin guitar, but kept the electrical components of the Baldwin. Nelson would pioneer the unique guitar and name it Trigger after Roy Rogers' horse.
Johnson admits his style of singing is unique, as he explains. “I always like to say I sing from the heart — and I sing in keys that don’t exist. So it’s a good combo.” Armed with Nelson's guitar, the actor says he's open to exploring music a bit further, and "maybe something in just the old-school soul genre, with some country flavor." Don't expect any up-to-date hits, as the former wrestler says he's more invested in "old-school soul."
It's clear that Johnson has a deep love for country music and has "such reverence and respect" for music from Nashville. He's also open to the idea of a duets album and would be honored to sing with artists invested in their music and country roots.
