A ground stop has been issued for flights heading to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport Tuesday as a line of potentially dangerous storms moves into the region.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the ground stop would be in place until 10 a.m. CT for departures aimed for Chicago from certain U.S. airports.
The FAA noted that there was a chance the ground stop could be extended.
At the same time, a ground delay program is in place at the Chicago airport until 10 p.m. and flight at Chicago’s Midway Airport were also experiencing delays due to the storms.
An “intense line of storms” moving toward Illinois from Iowa has the potential to bring “destructive” wind gusts, brief tornadoes and possibly even hail to the Chicago area Tuesday.
The window of potentially severe weather sits between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. CT, according to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes.
A severe thunderstorm watch was issued just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, continuing through the afternoon for many counties, including Cook.
