Dean Devlin, the CEO of LA-based production company Electric Entertainment, has responded to reports that the company is "in talks" with the BBC regarding the future of Doctor Who.
Devlin, who is also a producer, writer and director known for his work on Stargate and Independence Day, said that the company hopes to have a discussion was the BBC, but firmly denied that any talks have thus far taken place.
When approached by Radio Times, Devlin said in a statement: "It is untrue that we have had negotiations with the BBC. Preliminary or otherwise. When the proper time comes when they are prepared to speak with people, we certainly hope to have a discussion with them."
Radio Times has approached the BBC for comment.
It had been reported that Devlin hoped to reinstate David Tennant as the Doctor, after he played the 10th and 14th incarnations, but given that no talks have yet taken place, this appears to be speculation.
Electric Entertainment has previously been behind series including Leverage, Almost Paradise, The Ark and The Librarians, as well as films such as Bad Samaritan, which starred Tennant.
The BBC will this year be putting Doctor Who out to competitive tender, "as part of securing the next phase of the show for future generations". This will mean production companies will have the opportunity to make their own bids and pitches to produce future seasons of the show.
According to the BBC's statement announcing the decision to put the show out to tender, the broadcaster will announce details of the process "in due course". When it’s ready it will go live on their dedicated tendering site, the BBC eSourcing Portal.
One company which has already confirmed it will be entering the process is BBC Studios, with that company's CEO Tom Fussell telling Deadline: "We’ve been the producer for 60 years and we want to be the producer for another 60 years, so we will be going for that tender with gusto. We are in it to win it."
Meanwhile, the BBC's new director general said of the series last month: "That’s a show that has regenerated multiple times in its 60-plus year history, and we’ll do so again.
"I think that’s one of the great things about the 100-year history of the BBC. We can do that, and we can creatively renew shows that people love, and we’ll be working hard on that right now."
