He further reckoned that to improve the fitness level of the players, the current team management needs to implement the rules strictly related to the players' fitness.
"I feel we need to be a little stricter with the physical tests that we have... a lot depends on fitness, so we need to get back to that with such high demands and to stay at the top as a team," Wasim Jaffer suggested.
The tight schedule is believed to be one of the reasons why the top-category Indian players have been struggling with injuries. The Indian Premier League (IPL), the 3-month-long tournament, could be a reason players are forced to play matches with extra workload.
'IPL franchises have the right to push their players'
Wasim Jaffer expressed that the IPL franchises have the right to push their players to take part in their matches as they spend crores on them. If the physios declare the players fit, then the franchises have the right to ask their players to perform.
"I think the amount of money franchises spend on their players and on the tournament, they have the right. They also have their demands that players are available and the franchise does well. And when good players play, only then do their chances of winning increase. So they have a fair right to push the players. Somewhere they don't have so much to do with how the player will do when he plays for India or whatever," the former cricketer noted.
Jaffer further added that the franchises would never ask a player to play if the player was not fit. The player would only ask to play if the physio declared the player fit.
"They have their own personal right to want the player to be available if they have spent crores. If a player does not come or pulls out, all the combinations and plans are spoiled. As long as the trainers and physios declare players fit, they have the right. It will never happen that a player is unfit and he will be pushed to keep playing", Wasim Jaffer concluded.
