MUBI has given fans a first look at Andrew Haigh’s adaptation of Colm Tóibín's A Long Winter, which stars the likes of Outlander’s Caitríona Balfe.
The film, which is set to premiere later this autumn at the New York Film Festival, follows a family living in the mountains as autumn draws to a close and they prepare for the long winter ahead.
Alongside Balfe, the cast also features Fred Hechinger (Gladiator II), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear), Kit Connor (Heartstopper) and D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Warfare), while Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, David Furr and Martin Freeman also star.
The first-look images (above and below) show the family in action as they prepare for the long stretch of cold months.
Meanwhile, behind the camera, Tristan Goligher for The Bureau, Chad Oakes and Mike Frislev for Calgary-based Nomadic Pictures, and Michael Elliott serve as producers.
Haigh rose to prominence with his 2011 drama Weekend, about a love affair between two men, and has since gone on to receive further widespread acclaim with the LGBTQ+ series Looking, as well as films including 45 Years, Lean on Pete and the celebrated period drama The North Water, starring Stephen Graham, Colin Farrell and Jack O'Connell.
In 2023, he released All of Us Strangers, his most significant critical and commercial success to date. Featuring Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Claire Foy and Jamie Bell, the all-star British drama was an emotional LGBTQ+ love story adapted from Japanese author Taichi Yamada's novel, Strangers.
The film was nominated for six BAFTAs, including best film, best director and best screenplay.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about his latest project, Haigh called it an "endpoint" in his career so far.
He explained: "I think of this film as a bookend to a lot of things I’ve been exploring over the last 15 years of making films."
He continued: "As I’ve grown up and my life has changed — all of these stories that have been me trying to understand my own background, my life, my childhood, absences in my own life and certain losses — I’ve come to terms with a lot. So I feel like this is an endpoint."
A Long Winter will be released later this year.
