OK, so the Bears lose about $4 million in cap space this year to get the deal done. But the trade-off that comes with the wiggle room under the cap in the coming years is what grabs my attention.
A quick look at Darnell Wright’s cap numbers over the duration of the mega-contract he signed with the team last week (cap% in parenthesis):
2026: $10,486,121 (3.48%) 2027: $9,414,400 (2.91%) 2028: $30,414,400 (8.57%) 2029: $30,414,400 (8.11%) 2030: $31,414,400 (7.9%) 2031: $29,600,000 (6.83%)Even though the team is still losing out on nearly $4 million in cap space in 2026 this season, spotrac’s data has the Bears with $5,045,220 in available cap space. That isn’t much. In fact, only the Kansas City Chiefs ($4,541,647) have less room under the cap than Chicago’s football team. But that is still enough to add some help at the trade deadline if necessary. The more notable number for me is the 2027 cap, at just less than $9.5 million. That one has a chance to be a deal-maker for this front office if things go their way.

That puts them squarely in the middle of the pack, but it’s not as if the team can’t create space with cuts and restructures that move them up the list. Then again, that isn’t a bridge I want to cross now. However, I do want to acknowledge the bridge’s existence.
I also want to point out that, on the other side of the bridge, there could be some pass-rush help that becomes available when free agency opens its doors. Again, it is wayyyy too early to go down that rabbit hole. But I can’t ignore the rabbit hole entirely, especially since Darnell Wright’s extension is what helped create it in the first place. So I’ll just mention it here and move on with my day.
