Carly Simon has a few things to get off her chest about a past relationship.
The 83-year-old singer appears to revisit a complicated past relationship on “Maybe I Never Loved You,” the second track from her upcoming album, Comes in Waves (which comes out Friday). Page Six listened to the track early and reports that while Simon never identifies the former partner, some of the lyrics have fueled speculation that she could be reflecting on ex-husband James Taylor.
“Maybe I never loved you / But anyway, I thought I did,” Simon sings before adding, “I married you, we had a kid / That counts for something.”
Later, the outlet reported that the song becomes less definitive, with Simon questioning both sides of the relationship before singing, “Maybe I never loved you / Maybe I always will.”
That complicated sentiment isn't entirely out of step with how Simon has publicly described Taylor, whom she married in 1972. The pair divorced in 1983 and share two children, Sally, 52, and Ben, 49.
During a September 2024 interview with AXS TV, Simon was asked directly whether she still loved her former husband and responded, “absolutely.” But she also revealed that the two were no longer in contact, saying, “I don't speak to him.”
Simon recalled initially feeling “really safe” in their marriage and described Taylor as her “safe person,” but said their differences and his struggles with addiction eventually affected their relationship.

The album also marks Simon's return to music after a difficult stretch of health challenges. Toward the end of July, the “Anticipation” singer revealed to PEOPLE that she had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease following worsening mobility issues that continued even after multiple joint replacements. She also disclosed that she underwent surgery for basal cell carcinoma.
The health challenges contributed to Simon retreating from public view, but they didn't stop her creatively. She recorded Comes in Waves during that period, marking her first album of original material in 18 years.
While revealing her diagnosis, Simon revealed she’s not slowing down: “But I have not stopped living, and I have not stopped working.”
