Dairy lovers just got some good news!
Full-fat dairy may be just as healthy as low-fat products, according to a recent study. Researchers are pushing back on the idea that full-fat dairy is linked to weight gain and other health issues.
The 12-week study by the University of Toronto found that adults who consumed three daily servings of full-fat dairy did not show any considerable increases in weight, body fat, cholesterol, or insulin resistance.
Furthermore, the study revealed that those who ate more dairy saw improvements in blood pressure and had a greater intake of calcium, protein, and vitamin D.
According to an interview with Dr. HectorPerez, a bariatric surgeon at Renew Bariatrics in Medical News Today, the idea of low-fat dairy being healthier is becoming an antiquated belief.
"What makes ‘low-fat’ even more outdated is modern evidence, which shows that the type of fat matters far more than total fat intake. Healthy fats improve lipids, reduce inflammation, and stabilize appetite,” Perez explained.
“Rather than obsessing over fat, I think it’s high time people educate themselves about nutrients that are actually good vs. bad for their bodies. I’ve seen people cut saturated fat and replace it with bagels and low fat snack bars, which just seems to me like changing the villain,” Perez added.
The research was conducted with 74 adults who were overweight or obese. They were put into three groups. The first consumed a low-dairy, calorie-restricted diet. The second followed an energy-neutral diet with three servings of dairy a day. The third group ate an unrestricted diet, with the only requirement being that they ate three daily servings of dairy.
The study saw no significant change in weight gain, body composition, or cholesterol levels between those who ate the low-dairy diet and the group that consumed three servings of dairy.
Dr. MichelleRouthenstein, a preventive cardiology dietitian, told Medical News Today her recommended daily intake.
“Total fat intake is generally considered acceptable in the range of 20 to 35 percent of daily calories. Saturated fat limits depend on your cardiovascular risk, generally, they should account for less than 10% of your total calories per day.”
