Hours after storms brought overnight tornado warnings and a possible tornado on the ground in part of the area, another round of potentially severe weather is possible Monday, marking the next of several waves of possibly severe storms this week.
The upcoming storms look to bring a repeat from Sunday, with scattered and potentially numerous thunderstorms expected from 3 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday.
The main threats with these storms will be damaging winds and hail but “a threat for tornadoes cannot be ruled out.”
“Damaging winds, hail risk, isolated tornadoes, heavy rainfall – all the threats are on the table. We’ll keep you updated if any watches or warnings are issued for sure,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said.
The storms will be capable of producing lightning strikes, soaking downpours and gusty winds.
“Like yesterday, some storms will likely be severe and may also result in flash flooding,” the National Weather Service warned.
Much the area is under the slight risk for severe weather, a level two out of five.
The threat is expected to continue overnight before another round of storms moves in again Tuesday, this one potentially even more severe.
“On Tuesday, here we go again. By noon, you could see another wave of thunderstorms approaching. So we’ll see showers and storms as we go into Tuesday afternoon. We’re going to be looking at again the threat for some severe weather with those storms,” Sack said, noting the “severe risk for tomorrow looking very similar to today.”
The NWS reported this round could “develop into an organized line or bow capable producing destructive winds, but it is not yet certain whether this will occur in our area.”
The exact coverage area and intensity of the storms also remains unclear.
“The stormy pattern will continue through at least mid-week with additional severe storms and instances of flooding possible beyond Tuesday,” the NWS reported.
Multiple tornado warnings were reported around the Chicago area on Sunday night, with at least one radar-confirmed touchdown in the area.
