Emmerdale airs epic three-hander episode as Charity Dingle tells killer lie in early ITVX release

How do you begin to cover up a murder? Well, luckily for Emmerdale's Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) and Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill), they had a copper on side.

Dr Caitlin Todd's (Caroline Harker) reign of terror is finally over, but the events surrounding her death could have far-reaching consequences for the years to come.

Abusive Todd had charged into Jacob's Fold for a showdown with Charity, who wanted her to admit to being a rapist. The altercation was overheard by Sarah, who, in defence of her grandmother, shoved the surgeon across the room.

She smacked her head off the coffee table and died instantly, a pool of blood forming on the floor.

In today's episode, Charity and Sarah stood over her body, fearing for their future. Sarah leapt downwards and began CPR, despite the fact she wasn't breathing and hadn't been for some time.

Charity ordered her to stop, but before they had opportunity to think of their next move, they were startled by a knock at the door. It was Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy), who was well aware of Todd's crimes and was the first person that Charity had confided in.

She was horrified to discover that her cousin Sarah had killed someone, and warned that from the authorities' point of view, there would be no evidence to support that the incident was an accident.

Serena also noted that, the longer they left it, the more suspicious it would seem.

Charity picked up the phone to call emergency services, but wanting to protect Sarah from losing baby Leyla, she took responsibility. Serena was stunned. They had to think of a new story, and quick.

The trio decided that they would say Todd had tried to attack Charity, and in defence, she'd pushed her away. Sarah then attempted CPR, which is why they delayed contacting the police.

Serena then grabbed Todd's lifeless arm and dug her fingernails into Charity's arm, hoping that this would be sufficient evidence to prove that she was being assaulted.

Most importantly, Serena said that her name must be kept out of it. The women were on their own.

She snuck out of the back door, taking with her the pair of gloves that she'd used to hold Todd's arm, as a sea of blue lights descended on the quaint Yorkshire village.

    Will their plan work?
